How To Do Self Hypnosis
How To Do Self Hypnosis
In previous months, we looked at hypnosis and NLP and how they can help people make subconscious changes in their lives. Unconscious behavioral changes occur once the change is accepted by the subconscious mind. We've discussed the three most common reasons people visit a hypnotist: to quit smoking, lose weight, and reduce stress in their lives. There are hundreds, if not thousands, of other potential applications for hypnosis, ranging from pain management to improved focus, from improving communication to eliminating specific fears. Other applications for hypnosis exist on the outskirts. Entertainment and past life regression are two examples of applications.
The edge is beginning to become mainstream as New Age thinking and beliefs become more accepted. People are increasingly turning to hypnosis to learn more about themselves. For some, this entails inducing deep hypnosis and removing the veil that separates the conscious and subconscious minds. There is also the option to travel back in time. I may have already lost some of you, but for those who have made it this far, let me say that whether or not you believe in reincarnation or the existence of a soul, you can benefit from this type of exploration.
Allow me to explain. Some people believe that the soul is eternal and that it can choose to live as a human being. While the past is typically hidden from the current incarnation, there may be instances where the veil is at least partially lifted and an experience triggers a thought or a "memory," such as going somewhere for the first time and feeling as if you belong there, or meeting someone new and within minutes having the feeling that you have known them your entire life. Others believe the experience is entirely fictitious. That a person is simply recreating the experience of a previous life. We could argue for hours and never come to an agreement on this point, but it really doesn't matter. Those who undergo past life regression while under hypnosis learn more about themselves and why they behave the way they do. A deeper understanding is achieved whether they believe they do something in a certain way because it was how they did it in a previous life or their imagination creates a past life experience as a metaphor to explain the behavior.
More and more books are being written about the past life experiences of those who have traveled the path. I've never read about or worked with anyone who claims to have been a historical figure in a previous life. (I apologize for disappointing you!) It's certainly possible, but the odds are stacked against it. I've worked with people who have had happy and sad lives, lives full of love and others filled with loneliness. Lives they've shared with others who are also present in their current life, albeit in a different capacity. "Do you remember when I was the mommy?" a child asks her mother. It is very common for the previous life to have some relationship or meaning for the current life. Again, the subconscious mind may be directing you toward a past life that has meaning for you now, or it may be creating a story similar to a dream to provide the explanation you seek or what you require to live a more fulfilling life.
One real-life example was a 35-year-old client who had recently lost her husband. Her best friend in the past life experience in which she was a man was the same "soul" that was her recently departed husband in this life. Her emotions were triggered by the experience, and she burst into tears. I asked her what was going on and if she wanted me to help her distance herself from the experience and emotional content because a person in hypnosis can easily communicate with others. She told me not to worry and asked for some time alone with the experience. When I later asked her about the experience and the strong emotions she displayed, she smiled and said the tears were tears of joy. She told me that it was then that she realized she'd never see her husband again. Knowing this brought her great comfort and aided in her grieving process.
Although many people have had intense experiences right away, it is just as likely that it is a dream. The meaning, like in a dream, may not be obvious right away. Others may have a sense that something happened but have difficulty recalling the event. Sometime after the session, they may have an experience that triggers the memory and meaning of a past life. As previously stated, this can happen spontaneously for some people, but for the majority of people, hypnosis will greatly assist in lifting the veil between the conscious and subconscious minds. Individual or group past life regressions are possible. Whether the content is shared with others or is too personal to share in that setting, sharing the hypnosis experience itself is enjoyable.
